Plants Area Supervisor

Plants Area Supervisor

Job description

Scotsdales Garden Centre are looking for a motivated, organised, and hands-on Plants Supervisor to support the day-to-day running of our plant area. Reporting directly to the Plants Manager, you will play a key role in leading a medium sized team, ensuring the plant area is well presented, commercially focused, and operating safely and efficiently at all times.

This is a highly practical role, combining people management, retail standards, and plant care. While horticultural expertise would be ideal, we recognise that the perfect candidate may instead bring strong retail and people-management experience alongside a genuine interest in plants and a willingness to learn.

This position would suit an experienced retail supervisor or department manager looking for a hands-on leadership role within a busy and seasonal environment.

Main Duties:

Plant Area Operations

  • Support the daily operation of the plant area, ensuring high standards of presentation, stock availability, and plant health.
  • Oversee plant care routines including watering, feeding, pruning, spacing, and general maintenance.
  • Ensure plant displays are visually appealing, well stocked, and aligned with seasonal priorities.
  • Manage the processing, checking, and merchandising of plant deliveries.
  • Work closely with the Plant Area Manager to maintain smooth day-to-day operations.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise, motivate, and support the team across the plant area.
  • Lead by example on the shop floor, maintaining a visible and approachable presence.
  • Assist with staff rotas to ensure adequate cover, including weekends and peak seasonal periods.
  • Support training, coaching, and development of team members, particularly around customer service and plant care basics.
  • Conduct regular informal check-ins and support performance management where required.

Customer Experience & Standards

  • Ensure excellent customer service standards are maintained at all times.
  • Support staff in providing accurate advice and assistance to customers.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, organisation, and visual merchandising throughout the plant area.
  • Encourage pride, accountability, and attention to detail across the team.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all health and safety procedures are followed, particularly around manual handling, outdoor working, and use of equipment.
  • Carry out regular checks of the plant area, benches, walkways, and displays to ensure a safe environment for staff and customers.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the team.

Stock & Deliveries

  • Assist with receiving, and checking plant deliveries.
  • Ensure stock is handled, labelled, and displayed correctly.
  • Monitor stock quality and minimise waste through good plant care and rotation.
  • Report issues with suppliers, deliveries, or plant quality promptly.

Requirements of the Role

  • Proven experience in a retail supervisory or management role, ideally within a garden centre or similar environment.
  • Strong people-management skills.
  • A hands-on, practical approach with a willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • A keen interest in plants and gardening, with the desire to build plant knowledge (or existing horticultural knowledge would be a strong advantage).
  • Confident decision-maker.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both with staff and customers.

Additional Information

This role includes regular weekend working on a rota basis, particularly during peak seasonal periods.
The position is physically active and involves standing, lifting, and working outdoors.
Training and support will be provided to develop plant knowledge where required.
