Caring For Your Real Christmas tree

We want you to enjoy your Christmas tree for as long as possible. Follow our simple tips on how to look after it and be happy knowing you can have a magical Christmas absent of tree woes.

Essentials

  • Water your tree regularly.
  • Keep your tree away from open flames and heat sources.
  • A corner is good – it keeps your tree safer from knocks and bumps.
  • If you’ll be using lights to decorate your tree, try to place the tree close to a socket.
  • Cover the floor or table where the tree will be placed to help protect from water spillages.
  • Wear garden gloves when handling as sensitive skin can get a mild allergic reaction and rash.

Care Guide - Cut Trees

Cut trees naturally drop their needles daily, however, follow our simple tips and it should stop your tree losing too many.

  • Once you’ve got it home, keep your Christmas tree outside in a sheltered area, preferably standing in water, until you are ready to bring it indoors.
  • Prepare the base of your tree using a handsaw. Cut about a half inch to an inch (1.3cm-2.5cm) off the bottom to aid water absorption.

TOP TIP – Keep your tree outside in water for as long as possible before bringing in to decorate, this will help to reduce drooping and needledrop.

  • Mount your tree as soon as possible after cutting the base.
  • Place your tree in a container of water that is replenished on a regular basis. You can buy special tree stands which provide watering space. Or, you can go for the tried and tested method of using a bucket filled with small rocks.
  • Make sure your tree is straight. It is a good idea for at least two people to put up your tree, one holding it stable while the other fixes the base. Always stand back to check that the tree is straight before you get busy decorating.

TOP TIP – If your tree is slightly too big for your selected space, it can always be trimmed down to size.

  • Finally, decorate and admire your Needlefresh Cut Christmas tree.
  • Don’t forget to water your tree frequently.

Care Guide Pot Grown Trees

Once you’ve purchased your pot grown Christmas Tree and made it home, follow our advice to give it the best care. Once Christmas is over it will then be ready to plant out in your garden.

  • Before you bring it indoors keep your Christmas tree outside in a sheltered area.
  • You will find your tree is still in its original growing pot and wrapped in a special Climate Bag.
  • Water the tree. Open the climate bag and water – there are drainage holes in the bottom so the water can drain freely.

TOP TIP – Keep your tree outside for as long as possible; the weekend before Christmas is ideal.

  • Once you’ve bought your tree indoors, remove the climate bag and place the tree into a decorative Needlefresh cover pot or on to a saucer.
  • In your desired location, place your tree onto a protective cloth or mat to help protect surfaces from any scratching or water damage.
  • Water frequently but be careful not to over water.
  • Have a joyous Christmas and enjoy your Needlefresh pot grown tree.

TOP TIP – Display your living tree in a cool room to keep it looking its best.

Norway Spruce

Considered the oldest traditional Christmas tree, Norway Spruce is bushy and well-shaped with short, light green needles and has a lovely pine fragrance.

For many years the Norway Spruce was the most popular Christmas tree variety in the UK due to the fact it grew locally and naturally produced the classic Christmas tree shape. Still grown throughout Northern Europe, it is a fast-growing species and tolerates most soils but does require good drainage. Every Christmas, Oslo, the capital of Norway, provides the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree in London with the country’s name-sake spruce.

Nordman Spruce

Coming in a classic shape, the impressive glossy, rich green foliage on tiered branches makes this the perfect tree for displaying decorative baubles. Finally, decorating this tree is pain-free due to the soft family-friendly needles.

Nordman Fir originates from the Caucus Mountain range, dividing Turkey and Georgia. Seed from Ambrolauri, Georgia is preferred because it is considered to produce trees which begin their spring growth later and slower growing, resulting in more branches – ideal for Christmas trees. Another advantage is trees that flush into growth later in the season are less likely to suffer from frost damage, thus avoiding any unsightly foliage. With careful pruning and the most favourable soils we can create the perfect Nordman Christmas tree.

Fraser Fir

Splendid for smaller spaces due to its slimmer, conical shape, the Fraser Fir also has a delicious balsam scent which fills the room for the entire festive period. When bought in a pot it is easy to find the perfect spot for it in your home, and its dense branches hold pretty soft green/silver needles – perfect for a family Christmas.

Fraser Fir is not widely grown as it only thrives in specific locations, especially from where it originates in the mountains of Eastern USA. Luckily – our Fraser Fir growers have spent years perfecting how to get the best growth and shape. Fraser fir is widely used as a Christmas tree, especially in America, and has been used more times than any other as the official White House Christmas tree.

Blue Spruce

Similar to the popular Norway Spruce, the Blue Spruce is best known for its beautiful colour; which varies from silvery-green to a stunning steel blue. Guaranteed to be a great centre piece to any Christmas.

Although native to the Rocky Mountains, USA, the Blue Spruce has been widely introduced elsewhere and is used as an ornamental tree far beyond its origin. This species has an excellent natural shape and requires little shearing, partially leading to its popularity of being used as a Christmas tree.

Omorika

The Omorika has dense branches and charming two-tone green and blue foliage giving it a decorative edge. A lovely narrow shape, it is ideally suited to smaller spaces and if bought in a pot it’s even easier to prepare for your magical Christmas.

Commonly known as Omorika, this spruce originates from Serbia and Eastern Bosnia and naturally grows in colder climates than its close cousin the Norway Spruce. It is often grown in areas affected by late frosts as it is less likely to get damaged than other species.  Though slow growing, Omorika is mainly used as an ornamental tree in large gardens and to a smaller extent for Christmas trees, timber and paper production.
